New Pomeranian Puppy Checklist: Essentials for Your New Pomeranian Puppy - Must-Have Shopping List

Bringing home a new Pomeranian puppy? Congratulations! These fluffy companions are full of personality and charm, but they also require thoughtful preparation. To make life easier for new Pom parents, I've put together this comprehensive, experience-backed checklist of essentials you’ll need for your puppy's safety, comfort, health, and happiness.

1. Crate

Why it’s essential: Crate training is often misunderstood, but when done correctly, it creates a safe and comforting space for your puppy to rest.

  • Helps with house training as dogs instinctively avoid eliminating where they sleep.
  • Essential for travel, especially airline compliance (most airlines require dogs to remain in a carrier for the duration of the flight).
  • Many hotels and Airbnbs require pets to be crated if left unattended, so crate training opens up more accommodation options.

Fit Tip: The crate should be about 1.5x your Pom’s body length (excluding the tail) and just big enough for them to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably . Too much space too soon can lead to accidents as your pup might potty on one side and sleep on the other. Look for a crate with a divider to make the space smaller at first. Once potty training is solid (usually within a week if done consistently), you can expand the space.

Usage Tip: Don’t crate your puppy for more than 4–5 hours at a time, and never leave them in a crate wearing a collar or harness (choking & injury hazard!). Younger puppies have tiny bladders and can only hold their pee 1 hour for every month old they are, so try to take them out every 2 hours in the beginning. This not only prevents accidents but also speeds up the potty training process.

2. Dog Bed

A soft, memory foam dog bed with side bolsters gives your Pom a cozy spot to relax and nap. I also recommend getting a crate mat so your pup has a comfy place to lie down inside their crate.

3. Playpen

Once crate and potty training are done, a playpen is super handy when you can’t give your pup constant supervision like when you’re cooking or working. We used one to keep Cece safe during her ACL surgery recovery too. Just make sure it’s big enough for bedding, food/water bowls, toys, and pee pads so your Pom has room to stretch and stay comfy.

4. Pet Gates

After your puppy is fully potty trained and the house is puppy-proofed, you might want to give them more freedom - but not too much. That’s where pet gates come in! They’re perfect for keeping dogs out of certain rooms (like the kitchen, where most of the dangers are) while still letting them roam around safely.

5. Harness

Pomeranians are prone to tracheal collapse, so always use a harness instead of a collar for walks.

6. Leash

  • Control is key: A short, non-retractable leash helps you guide your puppy more effectively and correct unwanted behaviors.
  • Skip the retractable leash: It gives too much freedom too soon, making it harder to protect your pup in emergencies (like an off-leash dog suddenly charging).
  • Safety first: Retractable leashes can snap, tangle, or even cause injuries. Stick to a basic, reliable leash that keeps your Pom safely by your side.

7. Brushes & Combs

Why they're essential: Regular brushing is non-negotiable for Pomeranians. Their thick double coat requires frequent maintenance to prevent painful tangles, matting, and skin issues.

8. Grooming & Hygiene Essentials

  • Poop Bags: I recommend this one with handles for quick, mess-free tying. You'll thank me later.
  • Dog Wipes: Perfect for cleaning paws after walks and wiping their fluffy butts. Poms are notorious for “poop butt,” and if not wiped regularly, you’ll end up with crusty, stuck-on surprises.
  • Tear Stain Wipes: Pomeranians are prone to tear stains. If left uncleaned, the area under their eyes can turn hard, dark, and gunky. Wiping daily helps prevent buildup and irritation.
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste: (my dog loves the poultry flavor)

Now technically, dogs under 6 months don’t need to brush their teeth since they still have their baby teeth, which will eventually fall out. However, I always recommend starting the brushing habit early. This helps puppies get used to the routine so it feels natural when it really matters.

Daily brushing is essential once adult teeth come in. It helps prevent plaque, gum disease, bad breath, tooth loss, and even heart and organ issues linked to poor dental hygiene.

  • Nail Clippers: The idea of trimming your dog’s nails can feel scary, especially if you're new. If you’re not careful, you could hit the quick (the sensitive part inside the nail), which can cause bleeding and pain.

  • Blood Stopper Powder: Accidents happen, especially while learning. Always keep styptic (blood-stopping) powder on hand. If you do hit the quick, dab a little powder on the nail and it will stop the bleeding almost instantly.
  • Lint Rollers: Your clothes, bedding, couch, and even your morning coffee will never be fur-free again once a Pomeranian enters your life. Trust me you can’t live without lint rollers.
  • Shampoo: This is the gentle 2-in-1 conditioning shampoo we use for Cece and Boo. It leaves their coat soft, clean, and fluffy without drying out their skin - perfect for regular use!

9. Toys:

Choose small, soft toys that are safe for tiny Pomeranian puppy mouths. I love this set of 10 plush squeaky toys as it offers great variety to keep your pup entertained, is machine-washable for easy cleaning, and even comes with a storage bag to help keep your space tidy and organized.

10. Dog Bib

With all those chew toys, dog-safe peanut butter-filled Kongs, and how fluffy Poms are, it's a guaranteed mess. Traditional bandanas are often too long and narrow to provide full coverage for your Pom's fur — that's why I invented these dog bibs! They're specially designed to protect your Pom’s fur during mealtime, drinking, and snacking.

11. Food & Feeding Supplies

  • Dog Food: This is the food we recommend for Pomeranian puppies. We highly recommend watching our video on what we feed daily — it breaks down how we choose quality dog food, ingredients to avoid, and tips for selecting the right one. Always go for a puppy-specific formula when your Pom is still growing, as their nutritional needs differ from adult dogs.
  • Treats: Our go-to training treats have simple ingredients, are soft, easy to break into small bits, and don’t leave crumbs everywhere — perfect for positive reinforcement during training.
  • Dog Bowls: I prefer these elevated bowls to keep your Pom’s head level while eating, which can be better for digestion. Just note that tilted bowls don’t hold a ton of water. For water bowls, this stainless steel water bowl is one of my favorites  - easy to clean, sturdy, and really well-made!

12. Pee Pads & Cleaners

  • Pee Pads: Pee pads aren’t a must if you’re planning to train your dog to go outside 100% of the time, but they can come in handy during the early stages or in extreme weather like hurricanes, snow, or heavy rain. Just keep in mind that if some potty pad-trained dogs might confuse rugs with pee pads and have accidents. And if your pup is only trained to go outside, they might hold it during unsafe weather — which isn’t healthy for their bladder. Definitely something to think about when deciding whether or not to use pee pads.
  • Stain & Odor Remover: Stain and odor removers are a must - they eliminate lingering smells and help prevent your dog from returning to the same spot to pee again.

13. Chews

Save your fingers, your furniture, and your sanity.

Puppies, especially teething Pomeranians, will chew everything from our hands, your shoes, your furniture to your future. One of the best ways to handle this is to give them chew toys so you can redirect that mouthy energy to something appropriate (and save your fingers and furniture in the process).

🦴 Edible Chews

Bully Sticks

  • High protein, low fat, fully digestible
  • Non-staining to fabric and carpets
  • ⚠️ Always supervise your pup while chewing. Once the stick gets too small, it can become a choking hazard, so take it away before it reaches that point.

Rawhide Chews

  • Pros: Beneficial for dental health when chewed properly
  • Cons: Some flavored ones may stain.
  • Must always be supervised. Large chunks can pose a choking risk or cause digestive blockages if swallowed. These rawhides I recommended are generally safer than the traditional rawhide products.

🧸 Non-Edible Chews:

  • Great for calorie-restricted pups
  • Long-lasting and less messy than edible chews
  • Some may lack flavor, you can soak in beef/chicken broth for 15–20 mins to boost interest

🥜 Interactive Chew Toys

We highly recommend KONG rubber toys:

  • Durable, safe, and mentally stimulating
  • Can be stuffed with healthy treats or dog-safe peanut butter
  • Pro Tip: Occasionally boil in broth to keep things exciting & always wear the bib to avoid the mess!

✅ Safety Reminder:
No chew toy should ever fit entirely in your dog’s mouth. Always supervise and toss out worn-down toys before they become a hazard.

13. Bitter Sprays

Bitter sprays can help stop your puppy from chewing on furniture, cords, or shoes by making them taste unpleasant. They need to be reapplied daily as the bitterness fades within 24 hours, and should always be used alongside training to redirect chewing to appropriate items like toys. It’s not a standalone solution, but it’s a handy tool to discourage destructive chewing.

14. Toy Basket

Keep your space tidy and rotate toys for enrichment.
